Mike's Legacy

I made a fan character a while ago to portray myself on the forums I hang out at. Here's his origin.

Note: This story is 100% fiction. It's not based on events of my life in reality or anyone else's.

Chapter 1
Welcome To My Life

You’re side-faced in the mud. You’re left out in a remote field. Your body is aching. The morning wakes you up with pouring rain and lightning. You just got jumped last night by a gang of guys who wanted money and threw you in a remote field outside of the city-limits for anti-exposition reasons. Your money’s gone. Your family’s gone. Today’s the new next worst day of your life. You’d expect this situation to happen to someone else. Unfortunately, I’m someone else to someone else.

My name is Mike. I used to have a last name, but I dropped it a long time ago. Just now, I woke up, hoisting my aching self up to stand and remember what happened to me. As I did, I brushed off the mud that I was soaked in. I tried my best to get most of it out of my raggy hair and pale-blue jeans. It wasn’t any use to get it off my black and red sneakers (they’ve been dirty for the longest time). I wringed my black t-shirt under my green-plaid shirt, hoping it’ll get any drier than it was now, even if it was pouring. I rubbed my head in attempt to ease the pain I got from last night. As I remembered what happened, I turned around to face the city that hosted the attack. I was pretty far away from it (if you found 2 miles away pretty far). Instead of walking back towards it, I turned my back on it, and started walking the other way. It’s not that it was a long walk there. No. It was because there wasn’t any point in going back.

Thing is, I’m an orphan. My life was ruined early back in my childhood years just because this world likes to be mean. Wars, crimes, deaths, pain and agony is all I see in this world. It’s what killed my parents. It’s what killed me inside. I was sick of this place, and I didn’t want to deal with it any more. Thing is, I had to if I had hope for myself. Shockingly, I actually have a little left. I also hoped that redemption was in the direction I was headed.

What I didn’t expect is……that that’s exactly where it was.

Chapter 2
Why I Think NASA Is Full of Crap

It’s been a few hours since I’ve been walking, and the city was out of my sight. The clouds rolled away, taking their storm with them and gave me a break for the rest of the day. My legs were just about to give out, and it was late anyway. I sat and laid on the ground and just looked at the sky until the twilight lit up the field soon after.

It didn’t take long for the sun to set and for the star-flooded sky to become clear. I was always blown away by astronomy. On special occasions, a few foster homes would take the kids to a planetarium in the city to check it out things that also have their little spot in the world. Seeing all those formations of cosmic dust and spiral galaxies really made me think about the universe a lot more than most people would.

What I didn’t like was the bullcrap scientists were always saying about them; “They’re filled with toxic gases and carbon dioxide” and “On that planet, you weigh 5x more your weight on earth”. How can they friggin’ know something just by looking at a picture?! You don’t know that you weigh more on a planet just because something looks weird! You don’t know what elements exist on planets just by the color of its atmosphere!

……

Sometimes I get so fed up with their lies that I’d do anything to get out there and prove them wrong. Alas, it turns out I’m not so fortunate. I’m just another guy on the street with no chance at achieving something phenomenal.

After ending the debate with myself, I turned over and shut my eyes.

Chapter 3
It Sure Ain’t a Light Show

11:47. My eyes were closed. I was still awake. And a rock still wasn’t the best pillow. I had doubts that this wasn’t gonna be a long and sleepless night.

After a few more minutes of tossing and turning, flashes of blue light hit my eyelids. I grimaced, closing my eyes even tighter. ‘Locals must be setting off fireworks nearby’, I thought. I rolled over in attempt to block the flashes from hitting my eyes, but they were too bright, and they really started to annoy me. Fed up with fireworks, I stood up and frantically looked around to spot the people setting them off.

‘Weird. There’s nobody here’.

I looked up, but only to see the same night sky a gazed at a few hours earlier. I looked back in the direction that the city would be, but it didn’t look like they were pulling off the 4th of July early.

‘Weird’.

I tried to think about where the light was coming from, but I could barely even remember where I was. I was exhausted, and I couldn’t function properly at all. I chuckled to myself.

‘Heh. Dreams are getting the best of me. Seeing things are common, aren’t they?’

I turned around to head back to my “bed” spot. Suddenly, there was an explosion of light that appeared right in front of me that literally knocked me off my feet. It caused me to do 2 back somersaults before catching myself. Terrified, I shielded my eyes with my arm to prevent me from going blind. My eyes were open just enough to see a huge pillar of white light, shining and giving off a loud, high-pitched noise, like the sound you get when you gently rub the rim of a crystal glass.

I watched as the pillar slowly began to shrink until it was a thin line. Suddenly, it dissipated altogether. I hesitated, but then slowly lifted myself to my feet. My whole body was shaking in excitement, as if I chugged a whole case of Red Bull. I looked at the base area where the pillar of light did…whatever it did. But all that remained in its spot was a shining, transparent blue orb, slightly levitating off the ground. Tendrils of light revolved around it, passing in and out. A weird humming was coming from it, similar to the one the light pillar gave off, only softer. Small blue spheres were bouncing around inside it, colliding with each other constantly.

I didn’t know what to make of what just happened. It was incredible, but I was scared to death. I didn’t even have anything to say at the minute. This event would only happen in Sci-Fi movies or books, but….it happened….in reality……right in front of my eyes. Some people would scream, “HOLY S#^%@!!!” and run away. Then the news guys would come and get a good story.

‘THE NEWS. THE MEDIA. THE AUTHORITIES. OH, CRAP.’

Then I realized, the city people could’ve seen this thing from the city. If they did, they’d be halfway to where I was right now. When they get here, they’ll push me out of the way, and it’d probably the last I see of this thing. I had to do something. I had to hide this orb. Quick. But I was hesitant.

What would happen if I tried to touch it? Would I vaporize? Would I catch on fire? WOULD I DIE? Hundreds of possibilities rang through my head, but I soon disposed of them. It didn’t matter what happened to me. Look at me. I was a homeless punk with no possessions. If I died, my suffering was over. If I didn’t……then I knew there was something extraordinary waiting for me on the outcome of my decision. The reality of it was that I really had nothing to lose.

I gulped as I approached the orb. Even though I was ready fro what was going to happen next, it was going to be a heck of an experience. I slowly extended my hand out to touch it. Before I could make contact, the orb burst, releasing the smaller spheres it contained. I jumped back in surprise, and observed as the tendrils of light seeped into them. They slowly rose a few inches higher above the ground, and then they attacked my right arm. I felt a surge of icy energy run through my veins and to my heart. I clutched my chest in pain, as I felt my whole body vibrate. I then realized my hand was surrounded in a blue aura. I held it out involuntarily, and soon, the aura grew, encasing my inside of it.

Then, I blinked.

Before I knew it, I was shot out of Earth’s atmosphere in a streak of blue light.

Chapter 3½
Way Away

I felt dizzy. My vision started to blur. Stars, planets, and galaxies sailed past me as I headed to my unknown destination.

Then a planet came into view.

It had land.

It had oceans.

And I was headed straight for it.

Chapter 3¾
Flashbacks

I took in a breath, and started tapping my fingers across the keyboard. The monitor began to light up as it displayed my message in green text.

“Everyday, I have to face the world on my own. I feel stuck with nobody at my side to help me out. My dreams and hopes are dead. Frustration and pain is all that’s left to feel. Why did my life go wrong? Where has my hope gone off to? I’m on the verge of breaking down and no one’s here to save me. I’ve looked everywhere for something good, and I’ve always come back empty-handed. What’s there left to do?”

I stopped and leaned back in my swivel chair, staring at my words. I closed my eyes until something happened.

10 minutes later, a reply appeared below my paragraph….

“I’m not Dr. Phil dude, but it sounds like you might need help.”

‘Perfect’, I thought, ‘a smart-alek’. I typed out a comment under his reply….

“No shiz, Sherlock. Of COURSE I need help!”

“Okay, so you’re life sucks and there’s nothing left to live for, correct?”

“No, man. I LIED. My paragraph is a bunch of crap.”

“Alright, so how’d you get typing in this anonymous chatroom anyway? If you’ve got nothing, that is?”

“Where else would I be?”

“Foster home, huh?”

“Righty-o. Care to try “Advice” for $200?”

“Sure, sure. Well, if there’s nothing left in the world, how come you’re still alive? When was your plan for suicide brought up?”

I stopped. ‘Man, this guy knows everything.’

“I dropped it a while ago. 2 years, maybe. I didn’t like the idea of death, especially if it happened to me.”

“That’s pretty impressive. Most people just pull the trigger a few weeks after their time of depression.”
“Are you sure you’re not Dr. Phil, man?”

“Lol, no, dude. I’m just a normal guy who has a pocket full of time on his hands.”

“Hmm. It seems like time is what’s killing me slowly.”

“Nah, you don’t have it that way. Okay, I have some advice, but I have to ask you a question. Is that cool?”

I hesitated, but only briefly.

“Fire away.”

“Is there anything in the world that you think is worth going after?”

“*sigh* Nope.”

“Okay then. There’s only one thing to do…”

“Lemme guess: Suicide. Am I right?”

“No, my friend. LOOK AT THE STARS.”

Chapter 4
No Way

Nothing ahead. Nothing below. Nothing around. Darkness. A deep abyss swallowing me into a void. I can’t escape.

Can’t escape…

Can’t escape…

I gasped myself awake, clutching my chest hard. I felt sweat dripping down my face. I knew first-hand my blood pressure was screaming, and my heart was going like a drum roll. I tried to keep myself together, or else I’d have a heart attack or something. After a few minutes or so, my heart returned to its normal pace as well as my breathing.
‘What was that about?’ I asked myself.
Once I got my head together (and noted that I was still alive), I looked around….and never felt so much fear in my 15 years of existence…
It was nighttime and I was in a crater, its area twice as large as my own height. It was warm and its base was polished and smooth. Steam slowly escaped revealed cracks in the curve. I pulled myself up and got a better look at it. “Amazing”, I said out loud, “did I make this? What happened?” I walked out of it onto an illuminated field of grass and took a few steps back to get a view of the whole thing. Then, I lost my balance. I flailed my arms, trying to catch it again, but I couldn’t. My feet left the ground of the edge I was on, but not before I caught it with my hands. I dangled for a few seconds and looked down…..with eyes the size of dinner plates.
I was just about 500 feet above a large night-black ocean. The earth that I was clinging to continued down from me at a far angle, but not even close to the water. Pipes were erupted out of it, pouring out oddly colored liquids. Without thinking about trying to solve the mystery in my current position, I scrambled up, ripping grass at its roots on the way up. I rolled over on my side twice to catch my breath I lost out of fear.
“I’m floating” I said aloud. “FLOATING”.
I didn’t want to figure it out the situation right away though. Involuntarily, my gaze made me see a moon in the sky…just before I felt extremely sick. The moon was huge; at least 5 times the normal view of Earth’s….well, 3 times anyway. Half of it was shattered into pieces of its remains, but they still revolved around it. It didn’t look like anything would’ve collided with it, but rather shot through it. Stars illuminated the sky, some very large and bright.
I couldn’t take it. I crouched down, hands on my knees, and emptied the contents of my stomach. I wiped away the excess bile and took in a deep breath of air.

I had to find out where I was.

I knew this wasn’t Earth ‘cause I was….floating…and the planet’s moon was destroyed.
I looked around again, trying to keep the thought of hovering this high above certain doom out of my head. It didn’t seem like anyone was around. But I did see something in the distance.
I saw a faded illumination off on the horizon. As I winced my eyes, I saw that it was the lights of a city. I couldn’t get a good look of it, but I knew that it was. It was surrounded by trees and other moderate vegetation. It was also the closest thing to civilization. I don’t know what lay ahead, but either way, I had to be prepared for it.

With only a minute’s hesitation, I started jogging towards the lights…

Chapter 5
“Overlander”?

I raised my head above the bush up to the point where my eyes could see the streets of the city’s border. Oddly, there were streetlights and roads. How can they exist on foreign planet?

I ducked behind the bush and dropped my head in my heads to ease the confusion. It was still unbelievable. I was on another planet when the scenario is nothing but fiction. I was scared out of my mind, I couldn’t keep myself still. I don’t even know what I was gonna face soon.

“Get it together, Mike”, I said to myself quietly. “It’s true. It’s all true, and there’s nothing you can do right now. If you want something done, you have to do it yourself.” I knew I couldn’t have anything done just by staying back at my crash site. If I did, I was taking a risk of something bad happening. If I got the attention of the locals (if there were any), I’d have a better understanding than what I had at the moment. I straightened up, and peeked over the bush again.

The buildings were really weird: some of them rose in a silo fashion and some of them were silver and shiny. Others were dome-shaped and laced with metal materials of some kind. The streets were deserted. A breeze ran through, carrying loose tumbling scraps of paper with it.

‘Odd’, I thought.

Suddenly, something soft clasped around my mouth and jerked my head back. I suddenly felt as if my heart was going to burst out of my chest. I struggled at first, until my captor spoke in a masculine voice…

“Don’t panic, dude”, he said. “I’m not looking for a midnight fight. Are you trying to get in the city?”

I hesitated, then I slowly nodded.

“Yeah? Me too.”

He let me go, with a bit of a shove. After catching myself, I slowly turned around to face what would be the first local I’d encounter on this planet…and what I’d never expect to see in my life.

The creature had mostly yellow fur and was no higher than my waist. He seemed to have two eyes meshed into one, but maintained two green pupils. He had a muzzle right underneath his eyes with a small black nose. Long and curved ears stood straight on end on his head and were striped thrice in black. He had hair that spiked and extended out just above his forehead. His hands were black, but cancelled out at his wrist. He had a patch of white fur on his chest and I just realized he had a long black-tipped tail with two excess stripes in the centre. He also wore large black shoes (considering the creature’s size in general) with two white straps wrapped around each.

I don’t know what freaked me out more: his species, the fact that he talked, or that he talked English.

“Good thing I caught ya”, he said with a smirk. “It’s not easy getting into Echidnaopolis on your own. ESPECIALLY Echidnaopolis.”

He peeked over the bush I was hiding behind earlier and surveyed the streets. I stared at him for a few minutes, watching his eyes dart across the scene. Suddenly, he looked back at me.

“What’re you looking at?” he snapped.

“You” I said involuntarily. He threw me a puzzled look.

“What, you’ve never seen a Kritter before?” he asked, crossing his arms across his chest. I slowly shook my head.

“Yeah, well I’ve never seen an Overlander either. Nothin’ much to complain about, huh?”

“Overlander? What’s that?” I asked sheepishly. He suddenly looked at me with wide eyes.

“Do you have amnesia or somethin’?” he asked. “You look a little down…”

I scratched my head in frustration and confusion. I didn’t have time to mess with idle questions; I had to know where I am and what happened to me.

“Nevermind. Where am I?”

“Man, you DO have amnesia” he said with a chuckle. “You’re on Angel Island. Where else?”

“No” I said. “I meant what pla-“

Suddenly, the sound of a large switch being pulled was heard and lights flooded our hiding spot from concealed towers on either side.

“FREEZE!” an echoing voice said.

“Oh, crap! RUN!” the Kritter said.

He scrambled backwards and took off running. Instinctively, I jumped to my feet as fast as I could and struggled to keep up with him. I knew first-hand that when you’re trying to get something done and you’re caught, wherever you wanna be next is not the place where the authorities throw you in.

While running side by side with the furry creature, I remembered something.

‘Aren’t we floa-’

That’s when we screeched to a halt at the edge of the island. Bits of earth crumbled and made their way into the water below.

We both stepped back as the animal swore with a stomp of his foot. Suddenly, a wired net shot from nowhere and enveloped him in a cocoon. He gritted his teeth and tried to pull apart the wiring, trying to escape. I turned around to see that we were surrounded by a circle of hooded figures in black cloaks. I didn’t see their face but their glowing yellow eyes pierced me like needles. One stepped out from behind me with a sparking contraption in its metallic hand and tazered me in my spinal cord. Instantly, my whole nervous system collapsed and I fell to the ground unable to move. The surge pulsed through my body, each time with less pain than the last. All of the energy in my body seemed to fade away. It was hard to even think. Blood rushed to my head and I felt extremely queasy.

I felt my legs and arms getting picked up, lifting me off the ground and carrying me away.

Then, my eyes slowly closed shut as unconsciousness got the best of me.

Chapter 6
Jailed

Bang.

My head twitched.

Bang.

My wrists felt ice cold.

BANG.

I eyes popped open. I looked around, and I knew right away where I was. I was in a cell. It was kind of small, and all made up of metal. I was on a bench attached to the wall, with both of my wrists in thick (and complicated) shackles chained to the wall behind me. The door was to my right, steel plated and covered in rivets. The cell was kinda rusty, and it was freezing compared to the night outside.

Déjà vu, I thought.

On the opposite wall from me was the “Kritter” that caused me my misfortune. He was standing up on his bench, with shackles around his arms, neck, and legs. I didn’t know what the case was, since I didn’t know how strong he was. It would be very odd if he was strong enough to escape being held back by only his wrists. How could a small animal have that much strength?

He was going crazy. He constantly thrust his arms forward in attempt to possibly rip the chains off the wall. Each time he failed, he drove his fist into his bench, leaving enormous dents. That was the noise that woke me up.

“FOR THE LOVE OF AURORA, I DIDN’T DO ANYTHING, YOU RETARDS!” he screamed, to no one in particular. His eyes were starting to turn bloodshot and a single vein throbbed on his forehead. He then thrust his whole body forward and pulled with all his might. After a few seconds of straining himself, he slumped onto his bench, his chains clanging as they overlapped each other.

Then, he slowly raised his head to face me.

“What the hell are you looking at, Overlander?” he spat angrily.

“You” I said again. Every time someone asks me that question, I answer automatically.

“Well, cut it out! I don’t want to be looking at your face!”

“Then, don’t look over here”.

I’m never afraid to say what’s on my mind, especially to jerks like this guy in front of me. Obviously, he was pissed that he got caught, and now he’s taking his anger out on me. I got a lot of this from people throughout my life, so I know what I was doing. The best way to win over an argument is to keep your voice calm and not take any crap from the other guy. Although, I’d keep my mouth shut if he wasn’t chained.

The Kritter gave me a very nasty look.

“Are you trying to start somethin’? Look what you got us into!”

“I didn’t get us into anything. We BOTH got caught, remember?”

“You serious?! If you weren’t so huge, nobody would’ve seen us!”

“We would’ve been seen anyway!” I exclaimed, my anger rising a bit. “I’m not here to start anything! I’m just here for answers! I don’t care who gives them to me!”

“That’s what amnesia does to you, you moron. You forget things, and you need to know them again.”

“I DON’T HAVE FRIGGIN’ AMNESIA!!” I screamed, lurching forward. My wrists snapped against the shackles, keeping me from going any further. I was mad out of my mind, and he wasn’t helping. I’ve been on this planet long enough that I should know where I am by now. Every passing moment is teasing me because of that.

I glared at the yellow animal with gritted teeth. I felt blood pulse to my head, giving me an instant headache. He just sat there, smiling at me in my rage. He won.

“Sit down” he sneered.

I didn’t for a good minute, and then finally did so. I turned away from him, avoiding eye contact. As stubborn as the creature was, he tried to start things up again.

“What’s with you Overlanders and anger management?” he laughed. “I’ve heard echidnas have short tempers, but you……man!”

I didn’t reply.

“What? Can’t talk back?” he asked.

I didn’t reply.

He gave a quick snort and leaned back, still keeping his gaze on me. I didn’t look back so he couldn’t see my eyes watering up.

Why? Why me? Why here? Why now?

Why?

WHY?

“What’s the matter with you?” he asked suddenly.

I shivered. I don’t know if it was the cold or his sudden concern that made me. I didn’t think he saw my tears. Then I noticed a few spots of water on my bench. I wiped my face and sniffled.

“Nothing” I said in a weak voice. “It’s nothing”.

“It’s always something” he protested. “What’s your problem?”

Most people I talked to weren’t quick to forget a problem they’ve recently been in. Even so, I didn’t want to talk to him. He might make fun of me again.

“Why do you even care?” I asked.

“I don’t. But it’s too quiet in here.”

Figures.

“It’s nothing you should worry about anyway” I replied. “It’s my own problem”.

“Yeah, well they say that talking about it will make you feel better” he stated. “If that’s the case, maybe I won’t have to listen to you moaning.”

I chuckled. I really wasn’t in the mood for feeling sorry for myself either. I rubbed my eyes to dry them up, then I sat up straight.

“I’m lost.”

“Well, ain’t THAT obvious!” he laughed. “Like that’s anything new in life. I’m lost all the time, dude. What makes this time any different for you?”

I looked down and gave out a long sigh. “I’ve always been lost. Every day of my life.”

The Kritter gave me confused look. Obviously, he didn’t know what I meant by that. But then again, who would?

Just when I was about to open my mouth to explain my situation, the large steel door unlatched and opened with a long creak. I bit my tongue and shut my mouth.

A figure stepped into the cell. I didn’t know if it was a robot or a creature suited up in heavy mechanical armor. Its dark helmet had tubes erupting from either side of it, trailing to a cylindrical device on its back. Where the eyes were was a tinted visor with the same eye scheme as the Kritter. Its head had purple dreadlocks hanging down to its plated shoulders, some wrapped in metal rings. Its armor looked thick and tough, covering it from its head to its large boots.

Did I mention it was carrying a chrome pistol on its utility belt?

“Geez, it’s about time” the Kritter exclaimed.

“Quiet, you” the guard said in a muffled voice. “You’re getting off this island right now.”

“You don’t even know why I’m here!” he argued.

“Doesn’t matter. We don’t want your kind up here.”

“Being racist now, are we?” the Kritter sneered.

Racism? HERE? You’ve gotta be kidding.

The guard grabbed its pistol up to aim it at the Kritter’s head. The yellow animal sighed and looked back at me.

“Well, dude”, he said with a shrug, “See ya around”.

The guard then pulled the trigger and some sort of dart appeared in the Kritter’s neck. He instantly collapsed on the bench a split-second later. I was scared, not because of the affect it had, but if I was going to get the same treatment as him. The guard relocated its pistol and reached for what looked like a walkie-talkie on its belt.

“Security, send one down to cell B-6. We have a Kritter here that’s needs to be taken down.”

A few seconds later went by and a crackled voice responded from the walkie-talkie.

“Roger that, Julie-Su. Do you need assistance on the Overlander?”

The guard looked back at me through its tint visor.

“That won’t be necessary. I’ll handle him. Over and out.”

It relocated the communicator on its belt and drew its pistol again.

“Let’s go, hotshot.”
