You should use the SMB3 Mario or Luigi style.

I chose SMB1 since its a better homage to the NES. When people think NES, the first game that comes to mind is SMB, no?
But don't worry, as you can see, both Mario and Mario 2 have gotten representation. I'm sure you'll see something mario 3 related.

Needs moar moves..heres a move set I created:
A: Basic Attack, can use quickly for Rapid Attacks, can be used in mid-air
A+D-Pad: Strong Attack - Works in all directions (Up, Down, Left, Right) both on ground and mid-air, 8 moves total.
B: Jump - Can use single or double jumps, also used to begin mid-air attacks.
B+D-Pad: Smash Attacks. Strong, chargable attacks with immense power.
A+B: Special Attacks - Directions allow directed specials.
Select: Shield with no direction, Grab when directed - When opponent is grabbed, press A to attack them. Press a direction to throw them.
Start: Pause
Only thing not there is dodging..
